Special Thanks to Eric Hayes for the 'snd' resource from the Makin' Copies hack of 1991, included in the post-MacHack version of MSM 3K.
###
What you need to try this:
• Color-QD Macintosh
• MSM 3k Control Panel
• BackTalk! app
• Speech Manager Extension ( we used 1.0b5 from WWDC '93 CD )
• MacInTalk II Voices file ( from WWDC '93 CD )
###
Do This:
Install the above.
Put "MSM 3K" in your extensions folder. It's what draws the characters and looks for things to make fun of.
Put "BackTalk!" in your startup items folder. It's what actually does the speaking and 'snd' playing. (Playing snd's from inside INITs can be treacherous, especially if you're trying to do it in the background. From an app however it's quite easier and you don't have to jump through as many hoops.)
Put Speech Manager Extension in your extensions folder.
Put Macintalk II Voices in your System folder (not the Extensions folder)
Note for AV users: your machine came with speech built-in and installed, and MSM3K works with the speech synthesis you already have. Installing Speech Manager Extensions and Macintalk II voices is unnecessary.
Restart.
Try turning on Balloon Help, Trash Can warnings, Erase Disk, Leaving up a dialog box without responding to it, and otherwise just do some stuff with popular apps. You never know when some clever remarks will be made.
If you want, a last minute change allows the use of 'SND ' resources to be used instead of the text to speech MacInTalk voices. We didn't have the time to digitize the necessary chat. Too bad -- we would have won the hack contest ;-)
If you really like the talking, put BackTalk! in your Startup Items folder. If you don't, it is not necessary to have the app running to get the MST characters on your screen.
